McNair case keeps getting uglier

As awful as Steve McNair's murder was on July 4th, it's getting really sad and horrible to keep reading about how it all happened, and the fact that McNair's girlfriend (keep in mind he was married with four kids) killed him and herself in what was likely a jealous rage. In this article on Yahoo Sports, it's surmised that maybe she was jealous McNair was seeing someone else. Someone else, besides this woman and his wife? Yikes. It's all just so sad, especially for McNair's wife and kids.

Come on, Brett

So what happened to that big July 3 news conference where Brett Favre was to announce his un-retirement again? There are more rumors circulating (most of them true I'm sure) that Favre is going to sign with Minnesota. So why must he drag this out, again? Because Favre loves to mess with us, that's why. I bet he doesn't decide until like August 10 or later, just like last year.

Murder of McNair has black clouds hovering

As dark as the storm clouds hovering over my home city of Nashville were yesterday, they aren't as dark as the ones hanging over the murder of Titans' legend Steve McNair on July 4. After a 24-hour period when rain and the news of McNair's death dampened holiday activities, news started to leak out that this was not a random robbery/killing, but a homicide/suicide, and that it's looking like McNair's 20-year-old girlfriend shot and killed McNair before killing herself. And this is interesting because McNair is a married man with four kids. So the black clouds hovering are that of a darker side of McNair, and Teresa Walker, who covers the Titans for the Daily News Journal, chronicled both the dark side as well as the celebrations of what McNair did on a football field here in Nashville during his career. It appears that McNair had a drinking problem, and that he and wife Mechelle were having marital troubles. Also, since the couple's house is up for sale, it's very likely the two were separated because of McNair's new girlfriend, or that McNair had a girlfriend because he and Mechelle were separated. Either way, it's been a very somber mood here in Nashville the last few days, and our thoughts and prayers go out to McNair's and the girlfriend's families.

In 10 weeks....

I'll be writing my first "Mikey's Crystal Ball" piece....we did it the first two seasons of this blog and will continue in 2009. Just because we're called I Miss Football Season doesn't mean we take the actual NFL season off. So hang with us all year 'round!

No really, this year I'm taking a receiver first

Every year I think it will be the year I break tradition and draft a wide receiver in the first round of my fantasy draft. Last year I was set to do it, but alas, I wound up with the number one pick. I of course chose LaDainian Tomlinson, and LT had the worst season of his pro career. Thanks dude. I seem to have this curse where players on my rosters have reverse career years. But this year, I'm doing my part to break the curse, and I mean I'm taking a wide receiver, even if I have the number one pick. Someone like Larry Fitzgerald or Randy Moss or Andre Johnson or Calvin Johnson. In fact, I might pick WRs with my first two or even three picks. There are lots of running backs that will be available in the later rounds, and RBs are simply not as valuable as they were even 3 or 4 years ago. So there, I said it, and I'm doing it.

Indefinitely....

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is not messing around. He suspended Browns WR Donte Stallworth indefinitely after Stallworth was sentenced to 30 days in jail for manslaughter. That means Stallworth will likely miss the entire 2009 season, or at least a good part of it. The thing about the word "indefinitely" is that it leaves everyone wondering and for the guilty, makes them think about what they did and if they will indeed ever be able to make money playing football again.

So it's no surprise that Goodell is considering similar suspensions for Michael Vick and Plaxico Burress. Vick is due to be a completely free man July 20, conveniently just before most training camps open, but he hasn't done his time in Goodell's house yet. Meanwhile, Burress' legal battle continues, and Goodell may punish the receiver in NFL terms before his real-life fate is determined. You think these two aren't already thinking about what they did wrong and how it's impacted their lives? Just wait and see what happens if Goodell throws that "indefinite" word around.
